Dear Students,

I hope all of you have had a restful and rejuvenating summer.  Please read as much and as often as you can throughout the school year, both fiction and nonfiction.  Listen to audio books as well. Reading is one of the best things you can do for yourselves. (See the links and attachments below.)

 Mrs. M.

(See the EMS Grading Criteria Handbook for more details regarding additional requirements.  There is a link to the handbook on the EMS classroom websites page.)  The challenge activities are not extra credit.  Each quarter students who wish to be considered will be given a special piece of independent reading.  Students will be asked to read the piece and then will be required to respond in writing to the piece on a given date and time after school.  The piece for each quarter as well as the due date will be listed here when available.

First Quarter:  No Promises in the Wind will be distributed to interested students on September 14. Due date:  Tuesday, November 13.  Students must make arrangements to attend the written response session for the novel at 3:15 in the computer labs.

Second Quarter:  The challenge activity for this quarter comes from the high shool's English Department and will be administered in school.  The testing period will last approximately 90 minutes.  The challenge will include reading comprehension and writing.  (See Mrs. Masserwick for a copy of the scoring rubric.)  Review literary terms and writing guidelines. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ACTIVITY HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR.

Third Quarter:  Huntington Youth Writes contest Due Date: Tuesday, 2/19/13

Students must enter the contest in any of the three categories: poetry, short fiction, and essay.  See Document Manager for the entry form and scoring rubric/directions.  It is the student's responsibility to print out the rubrics and entry form.  Both are to be submitted by the deadline.
